Op. 18 YELLOW RIVER CONCERTO II (May 1, 1979)
(In co-operation with Chuck Kaplan) (790401)
Duel for Oboe (and Violin or Percussion*)

Inspired sardonically by the Yellow River Concerto
(1969), generated from a Chinese committee of
composers ~ Chuck Kaplan and I decided to write a
joint aleatory work, predetermined only by duration (c.
5 minutes) and form (ternary - ABA). The two
resulting solo compositions, kept under wraps until the
premiere, were played aggressively at each other from
dueling positions left and right of center stage on May
4, 1979, at Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA.

*This score includes only the oboe music. The second
part may be the simultaneous performance of another
solo composition for any musician. Percussion has lent
itself admirably beyond the first performance.

Oboe multiphonics are after Bruno Bartolozzi's New
Sounds for Woodwinds.
